Connecting with Gentle Giants at The Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket

In the heart of Phuket, the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary stands as a pioneering force in ethical elephant tourism on the island. With a commitment to rescuing sick, injured, and elderly elephants that have spent their lives toiling in the logging and tourism industries, the sanctuary provides a haven where these majestic creatures can finally experience freedom and dignity.

Mission of the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for elephants who have spent their lives toiling in the logging and tourism industry. After TubTim, the elephant that experienced a hind leg injury had to find a sanctuary, a more compassionate and ethical form of elephant tourism in Phuket was born. As a new and final home for these majestic creatures, the sanctuary provides a safe haven where they can retire in peace, providing them with the highest level of animal welfare.

All of the elephants were either born in captivity or spent substantial portions of their lives with people before being rescued and sent to the sanctuary. These elephants, having never lived in the wild, had developed strong bonds with humans over the years. With emphasis on education, awareness, and conservation, the Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket continues to motivate locals and visitors in the animal rights movement.

Embracing Ethical Practices at the Elephant Sanctuary

Endorsed by respected organisations such as National Geographic and World Animal Protection, the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is recognized for its dedication to ethical practices and the well-being of its residents. Here, elephants are given the opportunity to roam, bathe, forage, and socialise freely, away from the constraints of captivity.

As a final home for rescued elephants, the sanctuary offers a place of refuge where they can live out their days in peace and tranquillity. Visitors to the sanctuary can witness firsthand the transformative impact of ethical elephant tourism and join in the effort to support the welfare of these magnificent animals.

Each elephant is allocated a devoted mahout, or caretaker, who will accompany them while they explore the sanctuary. These mahouts form deep connections with the elephants based on love and trust, ensuring their safety inside the sanctuary's boundaries, directing them when necessary and providing care.

Rescue and Rehabilitation Efforts

Hydrotherapy is a vital component of the recovery and rehabilitation process for the elephants at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. For older elephants and those with leg injuries, standing for extended periods, even while sleeping, can be challenging as they lack the strength to rise once they lay down.

The therapeutic benefits of water play a crucial role in alleviating their discomfort and promoting their wellbeing. Being immersed in water allows the elephants to distribute their weight more evenly and relieves fatigued muscles and joints. During their first few months at the sanctuary, they are guided into the water using positive reinforcement and gentle encouragement. They eventually become accustomed to the hydrotherapy and freely wade into the lake.

For many elephants who have previously lived in trekking camps or shows without access to natural water bodies, hydrotherapy is a remarkable and transformative experience. It not only helps with their physical recovery, but it also improves their general happiness and quality of life as they experience the therapeutic effects of being immersed in water.
